As you can probably imagine, over the last 55 years in the industry, we’ve seen plenty of different kitchen design trends arrive on the scene. Some have come and then gone as quickly as they arrived (which might actually be a good thing for the more questionable ones!) whereas others have stood the test of time.

Today, we wanted to share a few of our favourite kitchen design trends, and why we adore them so much.

Open layouts

We all know that the open-plan layout has been a favourite for a while. It seems like every modern home nowadays has that spacious kitchen flowing into the dining or living area, so you can be sure that this trend is going to be sticking around for a long time yet! When looking at your kitchen, consider tearing down walls to really open up your space. It’s a fantastic way to create a space that’s all about mingling and making memories with friends and family.

If you’re on the fence about open plan living, we’ve created a blog where we take a deeper look at this trend and share our thoughts on how to make it a success in your home.

Quartz worktops

Quartz-surfacing countertops are really gaining popularity. They’re not just about their stunning natural stone appearance, but also their easy maintenance! Unlike granite, quartz offers a shimmering and timeless look that you’ll never grow tired of. Pair them with contrasting cabinetry, and you’ll create an elegant space that is guaranteed to make jaws drop!

Contrasting Colours

Contrasting colours in the kitchen have been a hot trend for quite some time now and doesn’t seem to be disappearing anytime soon. Whether you go for light cabinets and dark countertops or vice versa—dark cabinets with soft, natural quartz countertops—you’ll get a brilliantly bold look. Plus, this trend is so versatile as it leaves you plenty of opportunity to play with your favourite colours.

Shaker-style cabinetry

Shaker-style kitchens never seem to go out of style, which is why they’re a must-have on our list of timeless kitchen trends. The understated charm of their panelled cabinets makes them suitable for any space, as long as they’re matched with the right complementary elements. Think about incorporating soft or darker classic hues like green, navy, or grey, and then jazz things up with contemporary accessories.

Statement islands

Island units are hugely popular (not to mention practical!) and they continue to be number one on most clients wish lists. And for good reason; not only are they essential to the function and storage of a well-used kitchen but they can also be used to make a statement in your kitchen design. When looking at kitchen islands, keep an open layout with a single-level island. You can even opt for a unique shape or colour to really make it stand out

Open shelving

You may think that open shelves make a space look more cluttered, but this is not true at all! In fact, they are becoming increasingly common additions to modern kitchens to create a visual and homely feel. Think cosy farmhouse kitchen vibes!

As well as looking aesthetically pleasing, open shelves are also incredibly practical to access your kitchenware. Just remember that less is more, opt for bold-coloured accessories for a pop of colour in places, and move things around whenever you want to change your look. You can even thrift vintage dressers or other furniture to add extra interest and visual appeal to your kitchen.

Integrated appliances

The majority of appliances all look the same and don’t suit most kitchen designs so more and more people are starting to favour integrated appliances for a cleaner look. Modern appliances, clever panelling and built-ins means that this is easily achieved now and as a designer makes our job so much easier!

Induction cooking

Not only do they look great, but induction hobs are revolutionising cooking too! Fast, safe, and energy-efficient, induction cooking is becoming a highly desired quality to have in a modern kitchen. The speed of heating and easy of cleaning make these something that is totally worth investing in.

Deep drawers and specialised storage solutions

Making the most of storage space has always been, and will remain, a cherished aspect of modern kitchen design. Whether it’s extra-deep drawers, clever drawer organisers, hidden compartments, or spacious larder cupboards, these practical features seamlessly blend into a beautiful kitchen layout while significantly enhancing its functionality.

Big, practical sinks

When you think of kitchen trends, you don’t tend to think about sinks even though they’re such a key element of a well thought out kitchen. Trust us when we say that big sinks are going to remain in fashion! Everybody loves kitchen elements that look good but are also practical, so investing in generous, high-performance sinks is never a waste of money.

These bad boys do everything you want from containing splashes and accommodating larger items like pots and pans that may need hand washing, and they do it all while looking good. Even available now are super quiet sinks with a noise reducing pad incorporated in the basin to eliminate crashing and banging when washing up.

A lighter space

Natural light is what designers aim to use as much as possible when designing a new kitchen, but depending on the space this isn’t always possible. When this happens, LED lighting is used to transform the space into a warm and inviting area.

LEDs might seem intimidating, but advancements in technology have made them ideal for brightening up any space. They’re cost-efficient to operate and offer versatility in how they can be used—ideal for setting the mood or focusing on specific tasks within your living area. Give them a shot and experience it for yourself!
