Over the last few years, interior designers have seen huge potential when it comes to decorating the ceiling. Often known as the 5th wall, ceilings are the most overlooked canvas in our homes. We spend weeks looking at colours, textures, flooring, lighting and décor, and it’s time to start factoring the ceiling into our plans. Granted, ceilings aren’t the easiest place to decorate, but the results are totally worth it. Whether you’re looking to make your room feel bigger, create a cosier space, or wish to enhance period features in your property, you should consider some of these top-rated ceiling décor trends for 2023.

Bold Ceilings

Brightly painted ceilings are perfect for adding a splash of colour to any room. Bright colours are especially flattering in rooms with high ceilings and add contrast to otherwise white or neutral rooms. When done well, you can effortlessly add a contemporary look to a bedroom or living room. Match your pillows, throws, candles and accessories to the ceiling colour for a seamless look. You can really have fun with this one, so the brighter and bolder the better.

Colour Drenching

As one of the biggest trends of 2022, colour drenching is set to become the leading trend in 2023. Colour drenching is when you take one colour or a few shades of a single colour, and use it all over. We’re talking walls, woodwork, furnishings, and of course, the ceiling. Gone are the days of having to paint a room and leave the ceiling white. Depending on your chosen colour palette, you can create a cool calming space, or a warmth and comforting haven. We recommend breaking the colour up with contrasting colours and different textures, such as a velvet bed frame or a fabric sofa.

Dark Ceilings

Bear with us on this one. There’s just something so cosy about dark ceilings. If you’re looking to create a comfy space that shouts hibernation then you should consider a dark ceiling. This trend works particularly well in living rooms and bathrooms where you can relax and unwind. If you’re thinking of opting for a dark ceiling, make sure to add some balance by introducing some lighter-coloured furnishings to the mix.

Colourful Coving

If you’re not quite ready to commit to decorating the whole ceiling, why not go for a more subtle look by painting the ceiling borders? Painting the covers can draw the eye upwards, adding height to the room. If you wanted to add warmth and character, you could try gold. If you’re worried about the borders reflecting too much, opt for a matte paint or eggshell, which gives a pearl-like finish. This trend has been particularly popular for adding character to kitchens and living areas.

Panelling

Panelling was one of the biggest interior trends for 2022, and it’s not going anywhere. Wall panelling is one of the easiest ways to add elegance to any room and we’re expecting to see lots of panelled ceilings this year too. Whether you have a period home or a new build, panelling can enhance the look of any wall or surface. Its 3D effect makes any wall appear more visual and is the perfect addition to large surface areas such as ceilings.

Wallpaper

Wallpapering the ceiling may sound like a daunting process, but with proper planning, practice, or an experienced decorator, wallpaper can create a super unique look, especially in a bedroom. Over the last year, ceiling murals have become a popular choice for adding patterns and designs to bedrooms. You may have seen cloud murals on sites such as Pinterest, which make you feel like you’re looking up at the sky. The perfect addition to a nursery or child’s bedroom.
