Bedrooms are tricky rooms to design. This is because you need to strike the perfect balance between style and function in a room which is primarily designed for relaxing and recharging.

The good news is that we’ve redesigned more bedrooms than we can remember, and today, we’d like to share some of that knowledge.

If you’re currently scratching your head and wondering how on earth you can redesign your own bedroom, read on. It’s far easier when you know how!

Start by choosing your colour

The colour is arguably the most important design aesthetic in any bedroom. Get it wrong, and it won’t help you relax. Get it right, and it’ll create an air of tranquillity which will make you feel calmer as soon as you walk into the room.

Finding the right colour depends on three factors:

  • the size of your bedroom;
  • the existing features within the room; and
  • the lighting (both natural and artificial).

For instance, if your bedroom is on the small side and you want to create an illusion of more space, a lighter colour scheme overall will work wonders.

If your bedroom is north-facing and often colder than you’d like it to be, warmer colours or one dramatic feature wall colour will have a tangible effect.

If you want to keep things more understated, we’d recommend opting for a muted palette and simply adding splashes of colour via soft furnishings, throws, pillows, and pictures which you can change easily whenever desired.

Think about the layout

Colours sorted, you can now turn you attention to where everything should be positioned.

Start with the bed. Do you want it near the window or a radiator? Can it be positioned so that it’s possible to walk around all sides? In all but the tiniest rooms, there should be an optimal position for the bed from which you can work out the layout of the rest of the room.

It’s also worth thinking about bedside tables; do you want them (or have room for them)? And how easy will it be to make the bed depending on where you place it?

Try drawing the layout on graph paper and pay special attention to where the natural light will be coming from. With the bed in place, you can then organise the rest of the furniture around it. If you can, try and avoid large cabinets and wardrobes; add just what you need and let the floor space breathe.

Decide on the storage you need

Storage will play a huge role in your bedroom. Bear in mind that fitted furniture tends to be more expensive and takes up more space – especially in a smaller room.

Unfitted furniture doesn’t have to match the room (in fact, some people prefer it not to), but it will give you more space to play with. The key is to look for smart storage solutions and make use of wall space by adding shelving rather than floor-standing units.

Integrated storage within the bed itself is also a great way to keep clutter out of view and allow the design of the room to flourish.

Think about alternatives

If you’re planning a loft conversion, you might discover that it’s a far better master bedroom than what you have currently. So, why not move into that space instead?

Likewise, if you have a large bedroom and the bathroom is on a different floor, you could add an ensuite without planning permission (although it’ll still need to conform to building regulations).

Alternatively, if you do have bedroom space to spare, don’t look past the benefits of converting some of it into a walk-in dressing room.
