As we approach the last few months of 2021, we decided now would be a good time to look back on some of the biggest bathroom trends that we’ve seen this year. We’ve seen more colourful bathrooms than we have in a while and homeowners seem to have been enjoying transforming their small bathroom spaces into bright and colourful little havens.

At Modern Homes we’ve put together a list of the biggest bathroom trends of 2021.

If you’d like to include any of these elements in your next bathroom design, just give us a shout.

Wallpaper

Over the last year wallpaper has certainly won the crown for being the most popular new bathroom trend. We know, we know; wallpaper and water aren’t usually an ideal combination. But companies are now producing water resistant and wipe-down wallpapers suitable for bathrooms and wet rooms.

Bathrooms are often quite small spaces, unless you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom of course, which makes them the perfect room to experiment with wallpaper, bold patterns, and striking colours. A bathroom or ensuite is a great place to start when it comes to letting your creativity run free as you can experiment with wallpaper in a small space rather than overwhelming a large room or living space.

Traditional Black and White

Black and white is one of the most versatile, stylish, and timeless bathroom trends that we see time and time again. The options are endless when it comes to monochrome. You could opt for black and white wall tiles, white walls and black floors, a white suite with black details, or a white bathroom with all black accessories. Black and white is easy to style too, so you can add elements of colour whenever you fancy to switch things up. If you’re looking to make a real statement, then a black freestanding bath will make a real impact.

We can see this one staying way beyond 2021.

Terrazzo Tiling

Originally developed as a budget flooring solution, terrazzo tiling has become a popular choice for adding an element of fun into any bathroom space. Although smooth to touch, the ‘sprinkles’ of colour can add a textured appearance to otherwise plain tiles.

Made of waste marble pieces in Italy, Terrazzo has been making its way into our homes over the last year and is the perfect sustainable material for floors, surfaces and walls.

Pretty Pink Bathrooms

Pink has made a comeback in many shades from gorgeous blush, pastels and brights.

Although the idea of a pink bathroom may not be for everybody, there have been some beautiful results surface from this Instagram-ready trend.

Whether you decide to go all out with pink tiling, walls or floor, or stick to a white suite with pink towels, a pastel pink shower curtain and pink bath matt. Pink is perfect for adding warmth alongside an element of girly fun.

Blackout

A big contrast to pink and a little moodier than monochrome, full black bathrooms seem to have taken over Pinterest. If you like black and white but fancy something different and are brave enough to go all out, then go for black.

Paired with silver, gold, or on its own, black gives an expensive, daring, and high fashion feel to any bathroom. Black is a bold move and although it can be scary to commit, the results are beautiful. We can see this one sticking around a while longer, the only thing you must be sure to get right with black is the lighting.

Pink and Green

This green leaf wallpaper and pink painted walls trend has been around for quite some time now. Although an unusual colour combination, pastel pink paint and banana leaf wallpaper can transform any bathroom into a stylish tropical paradise.

Paired with pink bathroom accessories, cacti and leafy plants, this bathroom trend is cute and girly without committing to full pink.

Relaxing and Contemporary

A contemporary bathroom is the perfect way to recreate a cosy, relaxing spa-esque experience at home.

The contemporary bathroom has clean flowing lines, curves, geometric patterns, elegant modern fittings and minimal styling. Using neutral colours and earthy tones, the contemporary bathroom is another timeless classic that creates a moment of calm whenever you enter. Think oval, freestanding baths, creams, light greys, tan and stone.

Could contemporary end up competing with monochrome in 2022? We think so.

Grey Bathrooms

The colour grey is the king of neutrals and one of the most used colours for bathrooms over the last couple of years. With so many tones to choose from, grey is a versatile colour that makes any sized bathroom look stylish and fresh. Try dark greys for a more dramatic look or light muted grey to create a soft relaxing atmosphere.
