Bathrooms are one of the hardest rooms to get right when you’re improving your home.

Unless you have a lot of space to play with, one of the key concerns in your bathroom probably relates to storage space and where everything will go.

Where do you place all of those shampoo bottles, razors, and the variety of other products that occupy modern bathrooms?

There’s an answer for bathrooms of all shapes and sizes, and it’s known as the ‘shower niche’.

What’s a shower niche, then?

A shower niche is an increasingly common term that describes a discreet storage space placed within the wall of your shower or bath.

It’s a great way to create a dependable, unobtrusive storage solution for shampoo bottles, soap, and those other supplies you want to keep tidy.

With a shower niche, you can say goodbye to messy bathroom floors, cluttered window sills or the lack of any free space at the end of your bath. They also add to the design of the bathroom and create a beautiful focal point within your shower area.

1. Using the same wall tiles for built-in showers

Not that fussed about creating a focal point in your bathroom? That’s fine – a shower niche can be as discreet as you wish.

To do this, simply use the same tiles for your built-in shower as your walls. Thus, any recessed niche will blend effortlessly into the wall.

Consider grey, stone or wood-effect finishes for a modern and stylish look.

2. Enhance shower shelves with mosaic tiles

One of the best things about shower niches is that they enable you to play around with the design of your bathroom by combining different colours and textures.

The best way to do this is with mosaic tiles. It’s another way to make shower niches fade into near non-existence while still providing great storage space.

3. Spread the shower wall rack all over the wall

Want lots of space in which to store all of your bathroom trinkets? No problem – just make the niche as large as you possibly can.

This can be achieved by using the entire wall of your shower for the wall rack, thus expanding the capacity of your niche without taking over the rest of the room.

4. Illuminate the ceramic show niche

Some people like to make a real feature of their shower niche, and one of the best ways to do this is to illuminate the space.

By placing a light at the top or bottom of the niche, you’ll create a beautiful, calming effect that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. This light can be softer and less bright than the main bathroom lighting, so is perfect for when you’re taking a nice relaxing bubble bath in the evening.

Light is one of the best ways to really make your shower niche a focal point of the room.

5. Place the shower niche geometrically

Geometry plays a big role throughout any house – particularly when you’re renovating rooms. Nowhere is this more evident than in the bathroom.

This is particularly the case in the shower zone. By setting the shower niche on both sides of the wall, you’ll add a sense of harmony and balance to the bathroom.

Bath or shower time is always about relaxing, and when the room is geometrically perfect, you’ll find it far easier to unwind in your bathroom.
